The Pink Tax - Why Are Women Paying More For Pink Stuff?!

Let’s talk about the pink tax. Are you still not sure what it is? No problem, you’re not alone. In fact, research carried out in Great Britain by Kantar, commissioned by Estrid, showed that 4 out 5 women asked did not know what the pink tax was. So, let’s break it down.

What is the pink tax?

Here’s the deal. When you go into a store and look at products marketed towards women, and then look at the same products targeted towards men, like razors or body wash, for example, the one for women is almost always more expensive.

That’s the pink tax. The name comes from the fact that the main difference between the two products is often that the one for girls is pink. Women are essentially paying extra for a colour. This might not seem like that big a deal, but if you go and have a look at the price tags, you’ll be quite horrified. The pink tax is everywhere and somehow everyone just seems to accept it.

Why does the pink tax exist?

Good question. The reasons are many and intertwined but basically boil down to sexism, and someone saying that women are more likely to pay more for pink stuff. Which is BS. There is a reason 1 out of 3 women choose to use “mens’” razors, and it’s probably because they are often cheaper AND better, not because of their super cool grey colour.

Bye pink tax

So how is this still happening? Why are women still paying more for products than men?! Specifically, why are women in Great Britain paying on average 78% more for razors than men are? No one knows. But we don’t like it. And you shouldn’t have to put up with it. Which is why our razors are so cheap in comparison to other similar products. We don’t want you to pay extra because the colours are cute. Or because a razor for women finally has 5 blades and a steel handle, like the ones for men. That’s stupid. Excuse our french, but f*ck the pink tax. You deserve better, we all do.
