Whether removing body fluff makes you feel good, or something you fancy doing now and again, this skincare ritual can lead to ingrown hair that may leave you feeling a little uncomfortable. So, let’s figure out how to properly prevent and treat these tiny bumps on our armpits that cause us agro.
What causes the dreaded ingrown armpit hair?
If you're reading this, you've probably met ingrown hair before, painful little bumps that pop up unexpectedly. What’s happened is the hair has got stuck underneath the skin’s surface, instead of growing free and upwards it grows or curls sideways or backwards. Our armpit area is the perfect place for this to happen as the hair tends to be thicker, coarser and curlier.
6 quick tips and tricks to prevent ingrown hair in your armpits
- Exfoliate your armpits
- Use a sharp blade
- Shave in the direction of hair growth
- Don’t apply too much pressure
- Moisturise your armpits
- Avoid tight clothing
1. Exfoliate your armpits
Gentle exfoliation 24 hours before you shave and a couple of days afterwards will really help the skin shed dead skin cells, preventing the hair getting trapped. Our Essential Exfoliant does a great job in exfoliating your skin gently yet efficiently.
2. Use a sharp blade
Blunt blades don’t cut it. No really, dull blades can cause the hair to break off under the skin, leading to ingrown hairs. Call upon your newest, freshest razor blade for a clean cut and eliminate this from happening.
3. Shave in the direction of hair growth
Pull your skin taut and use short varying strokes and shave in the direction of the hair growth; upward, downward and sideways. This is far gentler on the follicle, helping to minimise irritation and prevent hairs from curling or growing sideways.
4. Don’t apply too much pressure
Try not to add too much pressure when shaving. Leaving a little bit of stubble can actually help prevent ingrown hairs growing in the wrong direction.
5. Moisturise your armpits
Moisturiser please! You’ve heard us preach this, and we mean it. Keeping your silky armpits SUPER hydrated with our Everyday Body Lotion will really help your skin stay ingrown hair free.
6. Avoid tight clothing
Give the old lycra or latex a day off, because tight clothing anywhere on your body is a no-go for ingrown hair. The material-to-skin friction creates a sweaty environment which the hair hates. Think loose linens from now on.
So, folks, hopefully we’ve tightened up a few loose ends here and your new, stunning ingrown hair free skin is ready to shine. For any more hairy tips and tricks, let us know your burning questions and we’ll be sure to help you out.
